Age limit to immigrate to Canada: what each year costs you in Express Entry points (2026)

"Is there an age limit to immigrate to Canada?" Someone asked us exactly that on this site. The short answer: the eligibility requirements of Express Entry set no maximum age. Age is used to calculate points, and those points drop fast. The figures below come from IRCC's official grids, checked on canada.ca on October 7, 2026.

In the CRS score, the drop starts at 30

The CRS score, for Comprehensive Ranking System, ranks candidates in the Express Entry pool. For a single person, age is worth 110 points from 20 to 29. After that, every birthday takes some away: 105 points at 30, 99 at 31, 94 at 32, 88 at 33, 83 at 34, 77 at 35, 72 at 36, 66 at 37, 61 at 38, 55 at 39. At 40, 50 are left.

After 40, the slope gets steep. Each year costs 11 points: 39 at 41, 28 at 42, 17 at 43, 6 at 44. From 45 on, age is worth nothing.

If your spouse or common-law partner comes with you, the column is a little lower: 100 points from 20 to 29, 95 at 30, 70 at 35, 45 at 40, 25 at 42. From 45, here too, age is worth nothing.

Your score drops on your birthday

Your Express Entry profile updates itself. IRCC says so in its reports: a candidate's age is updated on their birthday. Your score can therefore fall overnight without you changing anything. Once you are invited, your age on the date of the invitation is the one used for the calculation.

In practice, a single candidate aged 29 loses 5 points on turning 30, then 6 more the following year. After 40, a one-year delay on a language test or a credential assessment can cost 11 points.

In the 67-point grid, the drop comes after 35

The Federal Skilled Worker Program has its own grid, out of 100 points, where you need at least 67. Age is worth 12 points from 18 to 35, then one point less each year: 11 at 36, 7 at 40, 2 at 45, 1 at 46. From 47, it is worth nothing. IRCC counts your age on the day it receives your application.

At 47, the 67 points must therefore come from elsewhere. Without arranged employment in Canada or adaptability points, language gives 28 points at most, education 25, experience 15: 68 at most. You need an almost perfect score.

What makes up for age

Age is the one factor you have no control over. Your language level is another matter, and it is the most powerful lever. For a single person, each TCF Canada skill is worth 17 points at NCLC 7 and 31 at NCLC 9. With NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills, you also earn 25 additional points, or 50 if you have at least level 5 in all four English skills.

Take a single candidate aged 40, with an assessed bachelor's degree, three years of skilled work in Cameroon and no English. With NCLC 7 in all four skills, age gives her 50 points, education 120, French 68. Add 38 points for skill transferability and 25 bonus points: 301 in total. With NCLC 9 across the board, the calculation becomes 50 + 120 + 124 + 75 + 25, or 394 points.

Even at 45, when age no longer counts, a master's degree recognized as such by the credential assessment and NCLC 9 across the board, with three years of skilled work, give 135 + 124 + 100 + 25, or 384 points.

To put these totals in context: in 2026, in the ten rounds reserved for French speakers, from February 6 to August 19, the last candidate invited had between 382 and 420 points depending on the round. To be eligible for them, you need at least NCLC 7 in all four skills. These cut-offs change from one round to the next and guarantee nothing. We track the rounds here: /en/tirages.html

What about your spouse's age?

It does not count. For a spouse or common-law partner who comes with you, the grid only scores their education and their language, plus their work experience in Canada, for 40 points at most. A 42-year-old spouse therefore changes nothing in your score: only the principal applicant's age counts.

In a couple where both partners meet the requirements, it is worth running the calculation both ways before creating the profile. Our calculator gives the 67 points and the CRS score: /en/admissibilite.html#crs
