TCF Canada score: the scale, CLB conversion and Express Entry points
A TCF Canada score is not read like a school grade. IRCC looks neither at the 499 out of 699 nor at the 12 out of 20: it looks at the CLB level those figures produce, and it is that level which decides your points, your access to the French-language proficiency category, and sometimes your invitation. Here is the official scale, what each threshold changes, and why three extra points in speaking are sometimes worth more than a degree.
How the TCF Canada is scored
Four tests. Listening comprehension and reading comprehension are scored out of 699. Writing and speaking are scored out of 20. Each score is converted separately into a CLB level, from 4 to 10 and above. IRCC takes the level of each test: the lowest of the four sets your access to the categories, and each of the four counts in the CRS score.
The official TCF Canada to CLB scale
CLB 10 and above: 549 to 699 in listening comprehension, 549 to 699 in reading comprehension, 16 to 20 in the productive tests. CLB 9: 523 to 548 in listening, 524 to 548 in reading, 14 to 15 in the productive tests. CLB 8: 503 to 522 and 499 to 523, 12 to 13 in the productive tests. CLB 7, the key threshold: 458 to 502 in listening, 453 to 498 in reading, 10 to 11 in the productive tests. CLB 6: 398 to 457 and 406 to 452, 7 to 9 in the productive tests. CLB 5: 369 to 397 and 375 to 405, 6 in the productive tests. CLB 4: 331 to 368 and 342 to 374, 4 to 5 in the productive tests. What CLB 7 changes
CLB 7 in all four tests is the gateway to the French-language proficiency category of the Express Entry draws — the one where the cut-offs range from 382 to 420 points in 2026, compared with more than 500 for the general rounds. It is also the threshold for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. A candidate with 457 in listening comprehension does not have CLB 7: one point is missing, and the door is closed.
What the levels are worth in the CRS score
For French as a first official language, each test earns points according to its level: CLB 7 earns 16 to 17, CLB 8 earns 22 to 23, CLB 9 earns 29 to 31, CLB 10 earns 32 to 34 — per test, the range depending on whether you have a spouse. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four tests therefore means around fifty extra points, even before the skill transferability points combined with education and experience, and before the French-language bonus (25 points, or 50 with English at level 5).
Why speaking is often worth more than a degree
A recognised master's degree is worth about fifteen points more than a bachelor's. Three extra points in speaking — from 11 to 14 out of 20 — take you from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in that test, and earn just as much. French is the most profitable subject in a Cameroonian file: it is the one you can still improve at 35.
